Maxwell Steer's 'Sonnets to Orpheus'

album cover

Composer Maxwell Steer's setting of Rilke's sonnets falls into the broad category of 'contemporary classical' but this phrase does little to indicate the breadth of the music. This recording was definitely a step away from my usual idiom and was a great challenge, demanding virtuosity on soprano, alto, tenor, and baritone saxes as well as the ability to switch stylistically between a classical 'French' woodwind style and modal jazz improvisation.

"...neither does the saxophone playing of Carlos Lopez-Real avoid the challenge of diversity, moving from fluid and delicate tracery to hard-bop realism and vernacular bugle calls."
