Mandorla is an exciting band with an emphasis on strong melodies and grooves that draw you in. The music is very accessible, has a massive dynamic and emotional range, and draws on a diverse pool of influences including Steve Reich, Bjork and Benjamin Britten.
In 2013 I wrote new material for a tour, including 3 linked compositions inspired by Benjamin Britten's 3rd cello suite. The set featured those alongside other new compositions, together with some rearranged material from the first album. One concert, at the Guildhall School of Music, was recorded and filmed, and I'm now planning to release this as a live CD/DVD later in 2014. Some clips are up on the video page, but the music will be re-mixed/mastered before being released.
I feel privileged to have been able to bring together some of the UK's most creative musicians for this project. Mandorla are:
- Carlos Lopez-Real (sax/electronics)
- Oli Hayhurst/Dave Manington (bass)
- John Turville (piano/rhodes)
- Jon Scott (drums)
'Very impressive debut' - Jazzwise
'The fun Mandorla had making this album practically jumps out of the speakers. Gorgeously lyrical and infectiously rhythmic' - All About Jazz
